Early Years
Born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, he was a 1917 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. After graduation, he served aboard the U.S. battlefield.
WWII Achievements
During the First World War, he was stationed in on the French cruiser, Lutetia. After his 2-year service at the U.S. base in Norfolk, he was promoted to NFO leading his first command in 1929. During a number of successful offensive operations, he served as Chief of Staff to the commander of the Task Force. He was involved in such missions as the attack on Wake and Marcus Islands. He is also credited with the victory in the Battle of Midway in the Pacific theatre in June, 1942.
Personal Life
After two failed marriages, he married his third wife, Katherine Jane Eynon, in 1943. They remained married until his death.
