Family and Education
He had a Jewish descent and was the son of Albert E. Babbitt and Sarah Potamkin. The institutions he attended include New York University and received his Master of Fine Arts degree at Princeton University.
Career Highlights
Babbitt started as a teacher and taught music at the Juilliard School. His students included renowned composers and musicians such as John Rahn, Kenneth Lampl, Tobias Picker and the composer and pianist Richard Aaker Trythall.
He also ventured into electronic music and worked as a composer with the RCA Mark II Synthesizer.
Awards and Honors
In 1974, he was made a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the recipient of the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award in 1988.
