About Miriam Hopkins
This American theater, television, and film actress was a true southern belle. Ellen Miriam Hopkins was one of the top-tier screen divas of the 1930s and one of the Paramount Queens for the first part of the decade. She was a talented actress who collaborated with some of the best Hollywood filmmakers, including William Wyler.
Early Life
The Savannah, Georgia-born attended Goddard Seminary and Syracuse University.
Career
She started out in show business as a chorus girl while studying dance in New York. She made her film debut in “Fast and Loose” (1930) thanks to her Broadway performances, which helped her land a contract with Paramount Pictures. Her breakout performance came in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," a 1931 horror movie. She rose to the top of Paramount's wage earners because of her excellent performance in "Design for Living" (1933). “The Chase” (1966) and the horror flick “Savage Intruder” (1970) were her last two films.
Personal Life
In 1932, she adopted a son after four previous marriages. She had a rivalry with fellow actress Betty Davis.
Honors
She has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one each for television and film.
