About Misha Mengelberg
The Dutch jazz pianist and composer was one of the most creative figures to come from the early chapter of Europe's breakaway from the American techniques in the mid to late 1990s. Mengelberg gained media attention for his prolific work with saxophonist Eric Dolphy in 1964.
Background
Mengelberg came from a musical family in Kiev. His family relocated to Amsterdam where he trained in classical piano and later studied music theory and composition at the Royal conservatory.
Career Highlights
In 1966, he performed at the Newport Jazz Festival. He teamed up with several composers and co-founded the Amsterdam-based production studio STEIM. He also helped start the Bimhuis jazz club.
Mengelberg collaborated with saxophonists Steve Lacy and Anthony Braxton on the Charlie Parker Project in 1993. He has also worked on projects with the jazz talents John Tchicai and Peter Brotzmann. One of his most notable works was “Catalunya Renaixent" written in 1934.
Family
He was married to Amy for over 50 years and together, they had a daughter called Andrea.
Recognition
Mengelberg received the Gaudeamus International Composers Award in 1961.
