About Mississippi John Hurt
Mississippi John Hurt was the first blues performer to ever project a softer, friendlier persona. His music was gospel influenced, which enriched it with depth and reflective quality unheard of in the blues genre. He was a guitarist with an incredibly lyrical and refined fingerpicking style.
Family Life
Born John Smith Hurt, the blues singer grew up in Avalon, Mississippi. He started learning how to play the guitar at about nine years old. He was a sharecropper by trade, but he started singing and performing music at dances and other social gatherings. He remained a farmer due to the fact that his initial recordings for Okeh Records in 1928 were commercial disasters.
Career
In 1963, Hurt’s music career received a big boost following his interaction with Tom Hoskins, a big fan of blues. Tom Hoskins' rediscovery of Hurt led to his subsequent three years as a favorite on the coffeehouse and college folk circuit. He appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Newport (Rhode Island) Folk Festival, recorded several albums, many of those songs were recorded for the Library of Congress.

Death
Mississippi passed away in 1966, aged 73. The cause of death was a heart attack.
