About Mitch Miller
One of the most influential personalities in America and its music industry, Mitchell William Miller, better known as “Mitch Miller” was an American-born choral conductor, music producer, and executor in the record industry.
Early Education and Career
Coming from a Jewish family in New York, he grew up with his parents and four siblings. In the early 1930s, he attended the University of Rochester, graduating from the School of Music. His father, Abram Calmen Miller was a Russian-born Jewish who immigrated to the United States for a better life for his family. He worked as a wrought-iron worker, and his mother, Hinda Miller was a seamstress.
After graduating from the university, he began to focus on his music career, mastering the oboe and producing classical and satisfyingly enjoyable records.
Marriage and Children
In 1935, he married Frances Alexander and the couple had three children together; two daughters and one son. Frances died in 2000 after 65 years of marriage.
Achievements in Music
During the Largo Movement of Dvořák's New World Symphony, Miller was one of the participants; he played the English horn in the 1947 recording that was conducted by Leopold Stokowki. The following year, on radio, he got the opportunity to perform the American premiere of Richard Strauss's Oboe Concerto.
Heading the Artists and Repertoire (A&R) group, Miller became a great influencer of music between the 1950s and 1960s.
Cause of Death
Mitch Miller, after suffering from a short illness, died on July 31, 2010. He was 99 years old.
