About Moondog
Born Louis Thomas Hardin and professionally called Moondog was a highly talented blind American composer, poet, and musical instrument inventor of the 20th century.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Marysville, USA. By age five, he had learned the basics of playing the drums. However, he met a tragedy at age 16. Unknowingly handling a dynamite cap in a field, it exploded in his face, causing him permanent blindness.
He was enrolled in several American schools for the blind, where he learned many music principles. He later obtained a scholarship to study music in Memphis, Tennessee. However, he largely self-taught himself in music, as he learned through ear training and some books during his studies in Memphis.
He relocated to New York in 1943, and by 1947 had earned initial fame as a street musician and adopted the alias, “Moondog.” He often wore a distinctive “Viking-like” cloak.
Music & Innovations
He released many EPs, singles, and albums, notably the two eponymous albums with Columbia Records, “Moondog,” and “Moondog 2.”
The musician invented several musical instruments, such as the “oo,” “hüs,” and “trimba” (a triangle-shaped percussion instrument) – his most notable instrument.
Death
He died aged 88 on September 8, 1999, in Münster, Germany.
