About Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola
Abiola was a Nigerian politician as well as a businessman, who was known to be a noble of the Egba clan. Two decades after his death, he was posthumously honored with the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).
Family and Education
He was born to Salawu and Suliat Wuraola Abiola. The schools he attended include African Central School, Baptist Boys High School and University of Glasgow. From the latter, he graduated with a degree in accounting. He became a professional chartered accountant and was a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
He had multiple marriages and had a lot of children.
Politics and other careers
Before venturing into politics, Abiola started as a businessman and worked as an executive accountant with institutions such as Barclays Bank and University of Lagos Teaching Hospital. He became a successful businessman.
His earliest involvement in politics was when he joined the National Council of Nigeria and Cameroon (NCNC). His first official party was the National Party of Nigeria which he joined in 1980 and was elected as the state chairman of the party.
Presidential Aspirations
His first attempt to contest for presidency failed when the military seized power in the country. His next attempt was in February 1993, he moved from his first party and joined the Social Party of Nigeria, which voted him as its candidate for the presidential elections. It was evident that Abiola had won the election results but the results were declared invalid. He declared himself as president in some parts of Lagos Island. His action led to his arrest under the charge of treason.
Legacy
The Lagos State Government declared June 12 as a public holiday to be celebrated in honor of Abiola. The Moshood Abiola Polytechnic located in Nigeria was named in honor of him.
Death
On July 7, 1988, Abiola died of a heart disease at age 60.
Trivia
Abiola was a philanthropist who helped establish numerous social infrastructures and charity organizations in Nigeria.
