About Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq
Till date, the late Pakistani President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq remains a controversial political figure in the history of the country.
The four-star general fought in the Second World War, Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, and led a deployment to the Jordanian Civil War before he became the Chief of Army Staff, as appointed by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1976.
He overthrew the latter via a coup in 1977, declared martial law and became the President of Pakistan in 1978.
Family Life
He was raised in Jalandhar and Simla as the second of seven children born to Muhammad Akbar Ali, who worked for the Army GHQ of India Command of British Armed Forces’ administrative corps.
He was married to Shafiq Jahan, a Ugandan-born Pakistani woman from 1950 until his death. He had two sons and three daughters.
Death
He died in an airplane crash on August 17, 1988 near Bahawalpur, Punjab province, Pakistan.
