Throughout his 40-year career, Munro Leaf wrote and illustrated more than 40 books. However, he is best known for “The Story of Ferdinand.”
Education
The Maryland-born writer studied at the University of Maryland. He later attended Harvard University to pursue a master’s degree in English literature.
Career
Leaf first worked as an English teacher and editor before writing “The Story of Ferdinand.” The book was controversial and banned in Spain and Nazi Germany. His book was adapted to film by Walt Disney, which won an Academy Award in 1938. He also wrote other novels, including “Wee Gillis”, “The Watchbirds”, “The Story of Simpson and Sampson”, and “How to Speak Politely and Why.”
Death
He passed away in 1976 of cancer. In 1995, he was posthumously inducted into the University of Maryland Hall of Fame.
