About Muriel Humphrey Brown
Muriel Humphrey Brown, a politician and former second lady under President Lyndon Johnson, was the only Second Lady of the United States to hold public office as U.S. Senator from Minnesota after the passing of her husband Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
Background
She grew up in a Presbyterian household, attended public schools and studied at Huron College from 1931 to 1932. She married Hubert Horatio Humphrey, with whom she had four children. Max Brown was her second husband.
Marriage and Politics
After her husband entered politics as the mayor of Minneapolis, she acted as his informal advisor. Later on, he became a three-term Minnesota senator. Her husband remained a senator after losing to John F. Kennedy in the presidential primary elections until Lyndon Johnson selected him as his running mate. They ultimately won the election with Humphrey serving as vice president. After receiving a fatal cancer diagnosis in 1977, Hubert died in January 1978.
Muriel was appointed to replace her husband as senator until a subsequent special election could be held. The Mental Health Advocacy Act of 1978 was introduced by her in her capacity as a senator. Ultimately, she decided not to run in Minnesota's 1978 special Senate election for the remaining term.
