About Myles Horton
In 1932, Horton became the founder of the Highlander Folk School (now Highlander Research and Education Center) in Monteagle, Tennessee and also served as its director until 1973.
Family
He was the son of Elsie Falls Horton and Perry Horton. He and Zilphia Mae Johnson got married in 1935.
Education
He received his education from Cumberland University and the University of Chicago.
Career
In 1959, the Highlander Folk School was convicted for violating seclusion and selling alcohol and it was closed. Following the closure of the school, the educationist opened Highlander School 2.
He later attended the radical Union Theological Seminary and became a member of the Social Gospel Movement.
Horton appeared in the 1985 documentary “You Got to Move”, which centered on the Highlander Folk School now known as Highlander Research and Education Center.
Achievements
He taught prominent civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks.
