Personal life
He was the son of Palmira Rodrigues Afonso and Artur Maria Afonso. He had his education at the following institutions: Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto and National School of Fine Arts.
Nadir Afonso was the father of Artur Afonso.
Career Highlight
The Portuguese painter began his career as an architect but he also desired to become an artist so enrolled at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in France to gain more knowledge on painting.
He became a full time painter and continued to stay in Paris, France. He had the intention of starting as a painter in Paris but the competition there was very tight so he had no choice but to go back home. Upon his return to Chaves, he held his first exhibition in 1974.
He gained popularity worldwide after his oil painting “A Rebeira” was bought by a prestigious museum; and through that painting, he represented Portugal at the Sao Paulo Art Biennial.
His other notable artworks include: “Rua da Cadeia”, “Canto do Rio”, “Pontes de Paris” and “Pont de Saint Michel”.
Nadir Afonso’s works have been exhibited in museums, including Contemporary Art Museum of Lisbon, Pompidou Center, National Museum Soares dos Reis and Museu do Chiado.
Honor
The painter was honored with the Order of St. James of the Sword.
Trivia
He was the author of the books “La Sensibilite Plastique” and “Le Sens de I’Art”.
