About Naguib Mahfouz
Naguib Mahfouz was an Egyptian novelist, playwright, short story writer and screenwriter. He has been credited as one of the earliest Arabic literature writers to employ existentialism as a theme. The settings of all his novels are in Egypt and he is the Arab writer with the highest number of works adapted into films and television series. His best-known works include the novels “Children of Gebelawi”, “The Cairo Trilogy” and “The Harafish”.
Family Life
He was the youngest of the seven children of Abdel-Aziz Ibrahim, a civil servant and Fatimah Qasheesha. He married Atiyyatallah Ibrahim in 1954, when he was 43 years old. They had two daughters together.
Achievements
He was the first Egyptian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, having received it in 1988.
Death
He died on August 30, 2006 at 94 years old.
