About Nancy Harkness Love
Due to her aviation abilities, Nancy Harkness Love gained widespread recognition in the aviation world. She was an American-born test pilot who served as an army commander during World War II and continued to fly until her death in 1976.
Growing Up
With a very keen interest in flying, the aviator obtained her pilot's license at the age of 16. She later earned degrees from Milton Academy and Vassar College.
Career
In the 1930s, the aviator earned recognition for her work as a test pilot and air racer. She eventually enlisted in the military and served in World War II. Amongst her tasks was the supervision of a team of female pilots who transported aircraft between manufacturers and air bases. Love eventually created the Women Airforce Service Pilots and received an Air medal for her numerous contributions in the war.
Personal Life
The aviator married Robert M. Love in 1936. The couple had three daughters.
Death
The renowned pilot passed away in 1976, aged 62. The cause of death was cancer.
Honors
Two decades after her passing, in 1996, she was posthumously inducted into the Airlift/Tanker Association. In 1997, she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.
