The former professional golfer was regarded as one of the geniuses of women's golf and was the best golfer during the late 1970s and the late 1980s.
Family
She was married to Tim Melton in 1979 and they were divorced by 1982. She then went on to remarry; her second marriage, which was to Ray Knight, lasted from 1982 to 2009. In 2017, she tied the knot with Ed Russell.
Career
She started her college career at the University of Tulsa where she played for two years until she turned professional in 1977.
She participated in the Chevron Championships in 1995 and won the Women's PGA Championship three times; in 1978, 1985, and 1989. At the US Women's Open, she won 2nd place in 1975, 1977, 1989, and 1997.
Awards
She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987.
She won the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1978 and also "Player of the Year" (1978, 1979, and 1985)
Lopez was also the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1978 and 1985.
Trivia
Lopez is the only female to have won the LPGA “Rookie of the Year”, “Player of the Year", and the Vare Trophy in the same season.
