About Nate Thurmond
Popularly known in the league as “Nate the Great”, Nathaniel Thurmond was an American-born basketball legend who had a massive career as a member of the National Basketball Association.
Early Start
Beginning his career in Akron, Thurmond started playing basketball at Akron’s Central High School. At school, he played with Gus Johnson, who later became a colleague in the NBA. After graduating from high school, Thurmond began playing at the college level at Bowling Green State University.
His career in the NBA
In 1963, he was drafted to play for the San Francisco Warriors, currently known as the Golden State Warriors, after a sporting success career at Bowling Green State University.
At San Francisco, he played a supporting position on the team. His performance within his first season earned him the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1964. He became one of the respectable defensive players during his years at the San Francisco Warriors.
In 1974, Thurmond was moved to the Chicago Bulls for a year as a transfer player replacing Clifford Ray for the 1974–75 Season. A year after serving with the Chicago Bulls, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
After Retirement
Thurmond retired in 1977 and invested in the restaurant business, establishing his famous Big Nate's BBQ restaurant, which was sold after two decades in business.
Death
Thurmond died from leukemia on July 16, 2016. He was 75 years old.
