Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist and a TV host. He became the director of the "Hayden Planetarium" at the "Rose Center for Earth and Space" in New York in 1996.
Family
He got married to Alice Young and they have 2 children together. The couple met at the University of Texas at Austin. They named their first child Miranda. Miranda is the name of the smallest of Uranus' 5 moons!
Education
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and went on to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Texas, Austin. He later graduated from Columbia University with an MPhil and a PhD.
Career
The astrophysicist worked as a staff scientist at the Hayden Planetarium. He later worked as a guest research scientist and tutor at the Princeton faculty for two years. During his tenure as the director of the planetarium, he was noted for overseeing the $210 million renovation project, which was finished in 2000.
He became the founder of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History; and in 2003, he became a research assistant in the department.
Between 1995 and 2005, he authored monthly papers in the Universe Column for Natural History magazine, with some later being printed in his books “Death by Black Hole” (2007) and “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry “(2017).
He was a member of a 2001 government committee on the future of the U.S. aerospace industry and on the 2004 Moon, Mars and Beyond, a Presidential Commission formed by United States President George W. Bush on January 27, 2004, through the Executive Order 13326.
Tyson was the host of the television show “NOVA ScienceNow” on PBS (the Public Broadcasting Service) between 2006 and 2011. He also served as the host of “StarTalk” a weekly podcast in 2009. He also presented the television series “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey”, a sequel to “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage”, an award-winning series co-created and presented by famous American astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan.
Honors
He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, a Science Writing Award in 2004. Three years later, he received the Klopsteg Memorial Award.
In 2015, he was given the Public Welfare Medal by the National Academy of Sciences.
His book "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry" received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Spoken Word Album" in 2017.
