Neil Leslie Desmond is an American singer-songwriter and actor, noted for being one of the world's best selling musicians with over 100 million records sold globally.
He is best known for his hit singles such as “America”, “Cracklin’ Rosie”, “If You Know What I Mean”, “Song Sung Blue”, “I've Been This Way Before” among others.
Family Life
His father, Akeeba Diamond was a dry-goods merchant and his mother was known as Rose Rapoport.
He married Jayne Posner in 1963, but divorced in 1969, after birthing two daughters, Elyn and Marjorie. In 1969, he got married to production assistant, Marcia Murphey with whom he had two sons, named Micah and Jesse. The second marriage, however, ended after 25 years.
He married Katie McNeil in 2012, whom he had been dating since 1996.
Achievements
In 1984, he was included in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
He earned the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
Trivia
He was childhood friends with Barbra Streisand and Olympic fencer, Herb Cohen.
He was part of the NCAA men's championship fencing team in 1960.
