About Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was a South African politician, philanthropist and the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was South Africa's first black president. He was arrested in 1962 and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He served 27 years in prison. He published his autobiography in 1995, talking about his early life, education and his 27 years in prison.
During his lifetime, he received more than 250 honours, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize and the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Mandela and his government focused on dismantling apartheid through tackling racism, poverty and inequality. He is regarded as the "Father of the Nation" in South Africa.
