Although Nerva was in power as Roman emperor for only 16 months, he made a significant impact on the throne by putting in place a measure to ensure that the transition of power after him would be peaceful. He had previously served as emperor Nero’s adviser from 65 until the latter’s death in June 68. He also served as a consul during Vespasian and Domitian’s reigns in 71 and 90 respectively. He ascended the throne in 96 following the assassination of Domitian and reigned until 98. He was the first of the Five Good Emperors.
His given name at birth was Marcus Cocceius Nerva. His father was Marcus Cocceius Nerva, who was a suffect consul during Emperor Caligula’s reign.
He died on January 27, 98, a few weeks after he was hit by a stroke.
