About Nichelle Nichols
Nichelle Nichols made history in the 1960s when she broke ground for the future of African-Americans in television. In 1966, she was cast as Nyota Uhura in the sci-fi television series “Star Trek”, making her one of the first Black women to have an important supporting role on television. She also played the role in the show’s six sequel feature films.
Family Life
She was born Grace Dell Nichols to Salish and Samuel Nichols. She was the mother of actor Kyle Johnson, whose father, Foster Johnson she married and divorced in 1951. Her second marriage to Duke Mondy lasted from 1968 to 1972.
Honors
She was a recipient of the Life Career Award and the Inkpot Awards.
Trivia
Her autobiography “Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories”, was released in 1994.
She experienced a stroke in 2015. Three years later the actress' medical diagnosis revealed that she had dementia.
