About Nicholas I of Russia
He was Russia’s Emperor from 1825-1855. Nicholas I was the younger sibling of Alexander I, his predecessor. He was an autocratic leader. During his reign, he brought great industrialization and huge economic growth to Russia. He fought in the Crimean War and the Russo-Turkish War. He had the name Grand Prior of Russia in 1800 when he was just four years old.
Family
He was the child of Maria Feodorovna and Grand Duke Paul. In 1817, he married Charlotte of Prussia. He fathered seven children including Emperor Alexander II, Maria Nikolaevna of Russia (Grand Duchess), and Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (Grand Duke)
Death
Nicholas I died of pneumonia in 1855 during the Crimean War.
Honors
He received several accolades including Knight of the Garter from the UK in 1827, Knight of the Seraphim from Sweden in 1812, Knight of the Golden Fleece from Spain in 1817, Grand Cross of the Military William Order from the Netherlands in 1826, and Grand Cross of St. Stephen from Austrian Empire the same year.
