He served as the president of Columbia University from 1902 and retired three years later. During his tenure, the University witnessed an impressive development as new programs of study were mounted. The student population went from 4,000 to 34,000.
Politics
In 1888, he served repeatedly as a delegate to the Republican Party and was present at a number of national conventions. He made attempts to reconcile education with politics with the aim of promoting world peace through international cooperation.
