About Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot
Unbeknownst to many people, famous French physicist Nicholas Leonard Sadi Carnot was formerly an army engineer. His contribution to the theory of heat engines came to be termed as the Carnot cycle, for which he is best known. Sadly, a heavy bout of cholera claimed his life at a young age of 36.
Early Life
He was the oldest child of Lazare Carnot, a prominent figure in the French Revolution. His time at École Polytechnique began in 1812 and ended in 1814. He also attended institutions such as the University of Paris and Collège de France.
Career
A paper that he wrote in 1822–1823 was the first of his masterpieces. The work produced by one kilogram of steam was attempted to be expressed mathematically in this paper. The study's existence was uncovered in 1966 as a manuscript; it was never published.
His work on steam engines was published in 1824 as "Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu et sur les machines propres à développer cette puissance", which translates as "Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire". In it, he describes his most famous theory, "Carnot cycle."
His works and theories inspired a great deal of physicists that came after him, including English mathematician and physicist Lord Kelvin, German physicist Rudolf Julius Clausius, and French engineer and physicist Paul Émile Clapeyron.
