About Nigel Hawthorne
Like most of the popular actors of his generation, Nigel Hawthorne made his acting debut as a stage performer. He was first used in a play titled “The Shop at Sly Corner” which was performed in Cape Town, South Africa. He was used in a number of stage productions before making his onscreen debut in the 1956 work titled “Cry Wolf!”.
He’s widely recognized for his Sir Humphrey Appleby role in the sitcom entitled “Yes Minister”. He won many awards for playing the lead character in the 1994 film dubbed “The Madness of King George”.
Family
His parents Charles Barnard Hawthorne and Agnes Rosemary Rice played a key role in the development of his career. He had three siblings. He was known to be gay, and was romantically linked with Trevor Bentham.
Education
He spent his early years in South Africa and schooled at St George's Grammar School in Cape Town. He was a product of the University of Cape Town.
Awards
He won many British Academy Television Awards for his role in “Yes Minister”. His performances further earned him awards like Laurence Olivier Award, and Tony Award. The Englishman was also nominated for the “Best Actor” prize at the 1995 Academy Awards.
In 1987, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and became a knight in 1999.
