About Nigel Slater
Nigel Slater is an English cook, food writer, journalist and television presenter. After earning a catering diploma in 1976, he held jobs in hotels and restaurants for over a decade before landing his first food writing job in 1988 with Marie Claire magazine.
In 1993, he started writing food columns for The Observer newspaper and has been at it for more than two decades. He is also famous for his food and cooking-related television shows, “Nigel Slater’s Real Food Show”, “A Taste of My Life” and “Simple Suppers”.
Family Life
His mother, Kathleen Galleymore died when he was nine years old from asthma. He was subsequently raised by his father, Cyril Slater and his stepmother, Dorothy Perre. He has two brothers and two stepsisters. He is openly gay.
Achievements
He has won the James Beard Award, the Glenfiddich Trophy, the BBC Food Personality of the Year and the Guild of Food Writers’ Award.
Trivia
His memoir, “Toast: The Story of a Boy’s Hunger” was adapted into a film and a stage play.
