About Nnamdi Azikiwe
Nnamdi Azikiwe played an active role in Nigeria’s fight for independence. He started his career in Gold Coast where he was a journalist. In 1934, he joined the African Morning Post as their editor-in-chief.
During his time in the media, he advocated for African nationalism. He was also an active member of the Nigerian Youth Movement. In 1944 he co-founded a political party known as the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons.
Between 1954 and 1959, he served as the Premier of Eastern Nigeria. He was later appointed as the President of the Senate of Nigeria. In 1960, he became Nigeria’s Governor-General. After serving for three years he was elected as the country’s first president.
Family
His parents were Obed-Edom Chukwuemeka Azikiwe and Rachel Chinwe Ogbenyeanu Azikiwe. His first wife, Flora Ogoegbunam, died in 1983. He also married Nigerian educator Uche Ewah before tying the knot with Ugoye Comfort Aneche. He was survived by seven children.
Education
He attended Storer College, Lincoln University, Howard University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Recognitions
In 1980, he was decorated with Nigeria’s highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic. He was made a member of Britain’s Privy Council of the United Kingdom.
Trivia
He was also a sportsman and participated in events like soccer, tennis and athletics.
An airport in Abuja has been named after him.
As an author, he published some interesting books like “The Future of Pan-Africanism” and “I Believe in One Nigeria”.
His love for his country earned him the description "father of Nigerian Nationalism".
