About Noel Wien
A pioneer in the aviation industry, Noel Wien made his name known after he funded the Wien Alaska Airways in 1927. For his contribution to aviation and other disciplines, he was inducted into the Minnesota Aviation History Museum Hall of Fame in 1989.
Early Life
Wien discovered his love for flying at a young age and quickly learned to fly a JN-4 in 1921 from the commander of the 109th Minnesota Air Squadron, Major Ray S. Miller. He worked with popular plane owners such as E.W. Morrill, Clarence W. Hinck, and Jimmy Rodebaugh on his journey to acquire a plan for himself.
Career
Wien went on his first anchorage flight in 1924 and went on to display Anchorage's first aerobatic show later that year. He later purchased a Fokker F. III in 1925. The aviator became the first to travel from Fairbanks to Seattle. He was also the first to make a round-trip flight between Alaska and Asia. He pushed on the movement to fly jets from gravel runways and also found innovative ways to carry both cargo and passengers in Boeing 737 jetliners.
Achievements
The aviator was inducted into the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum Hall of Fame in 2000 and the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2010.
