About Noor Jehan
Pakistani singer and actress Noor Jehan spent over sixty years in the film industries of British India and then Pakistan. Given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum (meaning the queen of melody), she is known to have recorded more than 10,000 songs in multiple languages including Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and Sindhi. She found fame as an actress with roles in films such as “Koel”, “Intezar” and “Dopatta”. After 1961, she focused on a career as a film playback singer and became successful at it as well.
Family Life
Her birth name was Allah Rakhi Wasai. She and her ten siblings were brought up in a Punjabi Muslim home headed by Imdad Ali and his wife, Fateh Bibi. She was first married to Pakistani actor and filmmaker Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi from 1942 to 1953 and then to Ejaz Durrani, another actor and filmmaker from 1959 to 1970. She had six children.
Achievements
She was the recipient of over 15 Nigar Awards for her contributions to Pakistani cinema. She also received a President’s Award in 1957.
Death
She died from heart failure on December 23, 2000.
