After World War II (WWII), the Italian scholar and historian played a very significant role in Italy's legal and political scenery. Bobbio was a supporter of social liberalism.
Early Years
Born into a middle class Turin family, he attended the Liceo Classico Massimo d'Azeglioq. He became an official member of the National Fascist Party in the late 1920s.
Philosophy & Works
A defender of democracy, he listed free and regular elections, free contest between parties and majority rule as some of the components of true democracy. From the 1950s, he was focused primarily on negotiating peacefully with the Italian Communist Party and then establishing an opposition which would be democratic in nature.
Some of his English-translated articles include “The Future of Democracy: A Defense of the Rules of the Game” and “State, Government and Society”
Trivia
His ideology was shaped by such philosophers as Carlo Catteno, Luigi Einaudi and Piero Gobetti.
