About Norma Shearer
Norma Shearer overcame several obstacles, including suffering from strabismus that apparently made her physically unattractive to film directors, to become a household name in Hollywood. The Canadian-American film star was rejected by two heavyweight directors and played a variety of extra roles before she could finally land a contract with Louis B. Mayer Pictures in 1923.

Family Life
She was the daughter of Canadian lumber merchant Andrew Shearer and Edith Fisher. After Shearer’s business collapsed, Fisher left him and took her three children to New York City. Her other children were actress Athole Shearer and celebrated film sound engineer Douglas Shearer. Norma had two children with film producer Irving Thalberg, to whom she was married from 1927 until his death in 1936.

She won one Academy Award for Best Actress out of five nominations.

She died on June 12, 1983 from bronchial pneumonia.
