Norman David Levinson, professionally called Norman Norell, was a highly talented American fashion designer. He was famed for his unique tailored silhouettes, suits and elegant gowns, which raised the standards of the 20th-century American fashion industry.
Background & Education
He was born in Noblesville, Indiana, USA. He attended Shortridge High School and Benjamin Harrison School. He also enrolled at Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute, studying fashion illustration and design.
Career
His fashion designer career spanned over five decades, beginning in the early 1920s, when he designed costumes for "Paramount Pictures". Later in his life, He owned his fashion house in New York.
In the 1930s, Norman worked as a designer for fellow fashion guru Hattie Carnegie. However, he earned great prominence for his partnership with Anthony Traina to establish the "Traina-Norell and Norell fashion houses" in the 1940s. His detailed, simple and timeless designs dominated American fashion, as he earned numerous high-profile clients, including politicians, Hollywood stars and wealthy socialites. He was trade-marked for his "no-neckline attires" and was also the first fashion designer in the US to launch a perfume brand.
Norell was a founding member of the "Council of Fashion Designers of America" and the first to receive the "American Fashion Critics Award".
Death
He died from a stroke at age 72 on October 25, 1972.
