About Novalis
German philosopher and author Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg is known for his contributions to Early German Romanticism and his literary movement called Jena Romanticism.
Early life
Novalis was born to Heinrich Erasmus von Hardenberg and Auguste Bernhardine von Bolzig. Between 1790 and 1794 the writer studied Law at the University of Jena and then continued at the Leipzig University. He enrolled at the University of Wittenberg and later settled at the Mining Academy of Freiberg.
Career
The German romantic poet wrote and published "Hymns to the Night" in 1797 and other spiritual songs in 1799 but were later published in 1802. Novalis also wrote novels such as "The disciples at Sais" in 1903, "The Novices of Sais" in 1949, and other political writings such as "Faith and love or the King and the Queen", which was published in 1798.
Trivia
Novalis had a belief that religion was the opium of the people. This notion of his came long before Karl Marx’s in the 19th century.
He died on March 25, 1801, aged 28. The philosopher and poet had been plagued by cystic fibrosis. Others say he died of tuberculosis.
Some of the philosophers that Novalis influenced include Rudolf Steiner, Joseph Beuys, Franz Roh, and Martin Heidegger.
