About Nwankwo Kanu
Nwankwo Kanu is a Nigerian former professional footballer who enjoyed a successful career representing clubs such as AFC Ajax, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Portsmouth. At international level, he represented Nigeria at the under-17 and under-23 levels. He was a member of the Nigeria national football team from 1994 to 2011, during which he represented Nigeria in several international tournaments including the 1998, 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups. He is regarded as one of the greatest Nigerian footballers of all time.
Achievements
In addition to helping Ajax win the UEFA Champions League medal in 1995, he also led his country to win gold at the 1996 Summer Olympics. His individual awards include winning the African Footballer of the Year award in 1996 and 1999 and the BBC African Footballer of the Year award in 1997 and 1999.
Trivia
In 1996, he suffered a serious heart defect which almost brought his career to an end. He however, underwent a successful surgery to correct the problem.
