About O. Henry
O. Henry was a celebrated American short story writer whose short stories are famous for their trademark wordplay, wit and unexpected endings. Some of his most notable short stories include 1905's The Gift of the Magi, 1907's The Ransom of Red Chief and 1907's The Caballero's Way, in which he introduced his iconic character, the Cisco Kid.
Personal Life
His first marriage was to Athol Estes in 1887. Athol bore him two children, one of who died in infancy. The marriage ended in 1897 with Athol’s death from tuberculosis. His second marriage was to Sara Lindsey Coleman in 1907. Sara left him in 1909.
Trivia
He was an alcoholic.
He coined the popular phrase "banana republic" in his 1904 book Cabbages and Kings.
He was sentenced to five years after being found guilty of bank embezzlement 1898. He was released after serving three years of his sentence.
