Originally named Oksana Serhiyivna Baiul-Farina, and famously called Oksana Baiul is a retired Ukrainian professional figure skater. Having won an Olympic gold medal at age 16, she went on to have a highly accomplished and graceful career.
Background & Early Life
She was born in Dnipro, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. Oksana's father left their home when she was an infant, and by age 14, she had lost her mother and grandparents, who took care of her.
For a time, she survived through the support of her coaches. Then, in 1992, she lived in a public dormitory and was covered financially by the government because of her talents in skating.
Career Highlights
In 1993, she earned a silver medal at the European Championships and became world champion when she won the free skate event at the 1993 World Championships. In 1994 and at age 16, she took gold in the Ladies' singles skating event of the Olympic Games, making her the youngest figure-skating professional to win an Olympic gold medal at the time.
Following her success at the Olympics, she moved to the USA and signed several lucrative contracts to begin a professional skating career. However, unfortunately, most of her career was clouded by injuries that stalled her career.
She joined the cast of the skating musical "Cold as Ice."
