Olga Valentinovna Korbut is an acclaimed gymnast who represented the Soviet Union. Her ambition, tenacity, and tenacity helped earn her four gold and two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976.
Early Life
Born on May 16, 1956, Olga was raised by parents – Valentin and Valentina Korbut. Growing up in a post-World War II Europe, she found solace in gymnastics. She began her journey toward the Olympics under the training of Elena Volchetskaya, who was an Olympic gold medalist.
Career
Olga Korbut, the gymnast known as “the Sparrow from Minsk” due to her athleticism and tenaciousness, made her debut for the USSR in a 1969 competition. She was only 14 at the time.
Olga’s climb to fame began at the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich in Bavaria, West Germany. She received a lot of praise due to her acrobatics and high execution rate. By the time the competition was over, she had bagged three gold medals and one silver medal.
At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the gymnast took home one gold medal and one silver medal, bringing her total Olympic medals to four gold medals and two silver medals.
She won two gold medals and four silver medals at the 1974 Gymnastics World Championships held in Varna, Bulgaria.
Personal Life
Olga married Leonid Bortkevich in 1978, and they have one child; Richard Bortkevich.
Honors
Olga was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1988.
