Oliver Sipple Rank
About Oliver Sipple
Sipple's story typifies what most mean when they say a fall from grace to grass. The former marine was hailed as a national hero when he foiled an assassination attempt on US President Gerald R. Ford. Contrastingly, he was condemned soon enough when questions were raised about his sexuality.
Early Life
The former United States Marine Corps member was born in Detroit, Michigan
Assassination Attempt on Ford
On September 22, 1975, he had joined a crowd that had assembled in San Francisco to catch sight of President Gerald Ford. After a failed first attempt, he had grabbed the arm of the shooter, Sara Jane Moore, thereby thwarting her second attempt at firing at the president.
Aftermath
Rather than being celebrated for his heroic act, the media chose to fixate on his sexuality. Eventually the media outed him as a gay man which damaged his relationships and destroyed him in the end.
Personal Life
After news broke that he was gay, he suffered estrangement from his family, particularly with his father.
