About Olivier Messiaen
With a literary background, Olivier Messiaen developed interest in drama and poem recitals at an early age. During that period he taught himself how to play the piano and bought lots of recordings from some renowned composers.
The French organist and composer was widely celebrated for compiling the “modes of limited transposition” scales. In 1928, he started composing his maiden published work titled “Préludes pour piano”.
Throughout his career, he published many works with some of the popular ones titled “Saint-François d'Assise”, “Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum” and “Turangalîla-Symphonie”.
Family
He was the son of English teacher Pierre Léon Joseph Messiaen, and his poet wife Cécile Anne Marie-Antoinette Sauvage. In 1932, he tied the knot with Claire Delbos.
Education
He started his training at the Paris Conservatoire at age 11.
Trivia
The lifestyle of Italian Catholic preacher St. Francis of Assisi influenced some of his works.
Growing up, he enjoyed listening to composers like Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.
