About Otto Heinrich Warburg
Nobel prize winner, Otto Heinrich Warburg, was a German biochemist who made history by being the first person that believed that tumours could be treated by disrupting their energy source. He also served as an officer during World War I.
Early Life and Education
The German-born was the son of Emil Warburg, who was of Jewish descent. Warburg grew up loving science and was very invested in chemistry, prompting his pursuit of a degree in chemistry in 1906. Five years later, he earned his doctorate degree in medicine from the University of Heidelberg. He was under the tutelage of the famous German physiologist Ludolf von Krehl.
Career
Beginning around 1908, Warburg started conducting numerous research into how cancerous tumors could be tackled. He discovered that energy could be used to halt or disrupt the growth of tumors. This, coupled with his other findings, earned him a Nobel Prize in physiology in 1931. He was later named professor and director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology that same year.
Death
He died in 1970, aged 86. The cause of death was pulmonary embolism.
The German scientist never married.
