About Otto Klemperer
Otto Klemperer, in full Otto Nossan Klemperer, was an outstanding 20th-century German conductor. He conducted many operas in Germany and composed numerous classics, earning dominance as one of the most excellent conductors during his lifetime.
Background & Early Life
He was of Jewish descent and he received his earliest musical education at Stern Conservatory, Berlin, and Hoch Conservatory, Berlin. He also studied under the great Hans Pfitzner and James Kwast. In 1907 at age 22, he was appointed as the conductor of Prague’s German Opera.
Major Works & Career Highlights
Between 1910 and 1927, Klemperer conducted opera at Cologne, Hamburg, Wiesbaden, and Strasbourg. In addition, he conducted the “Budapest Opera” and “Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra” (1947-1950 and 1933-1939, respectively).
His original compositions include nine string quartets, six symphonies, seventeen works for voice and orchestra, and an opera.
During his later years, he earned great prominence for performing his rendition of symphonies by the great Anton Bruckner and Ludwig van Beethoven. He also gained acclaim for his modernized adaptations of works from the standard repertory, notably “Fidelio” by Beethoven. At age 70, he became the music director of the New Philharmonic Orchestra, serving until 1971.
