About Otto Skorzeny
After witnessing the Polish invasion in 1939, Otto Skorzeny decided to join the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). He later joined the Waffen-SS after his application was turned down by the previous service. After completing his training with the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, he joined the SS Division Das Reich regiment and was part of the team that invaded the Soviet Union.
He served in different ranks before he was made the Obersturmbannführer in Nazi Party’s Waffen-SS. He was best known for his roles in the Second World War where he was instrumental in many operations such as the removal of Miklós Horthy, a Hungarian Regent. During the war, he helped Italian politician, Benito Mussolini to escape from prison through what’s known as “the Gran Sasso raid”.
After service
In 1953, Skorzeny was transferred to Egypt to work as the advisor for the country’s new ruler, General Mohammed Naguib. He went on to work as a counsel for Gamal Abdel Nasser. It was also alleged that he worked for Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. Argentine President, Juan Perón, also hired him to work as his advisor.
Family
He married his second wife Emmi Linhart in 1939 and the following year they had a child called Waltraut. The couple divorced in 1953, and he went ahead to marry Ilse Lüthje the next year.
Accolades
He received the First Class medal of the Iron Cross in 1943. That same year, he was honored with the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross.
Trivia
In 1947, he was tried at a United States Military Tribunal situated in Dachau.
