Described as one of the best music composers during the early 20th century, Ottorino Respighi is iconic for compositions in ballets, orchestral suites, operas, and many other fields of music. The Italian-born teacher worked as a professional violinist and a musicologist of his time.
Early Life
Ottorino was born to Giuseppe Respighi and Ersilia Respighi. He had two older siblings – his older brother, Alberto who died at a very young age, and his sister, Amelia. The children grew up understanding the value of art due to the family's artistic nature.
His Road to Fame
In February 1918, Respighi was given the opportunity to perform in a series of concerts, notably about twelve of them, in Milan. This gift proved to be the push his career as a composer needed. The opportunity was presented to him by Arturo Toscanini, a renowned Italian music conductor. The program was very successful as it showcased Respighi’s composing ability and skills to the music world.
International Fame
Respighi made his international debut in America, where he performed in a number of concerts after he visited in 1925. One of his memorable performances was Concerto in Modo misolidio (Concerto in the Mixolydian Mode) at Carnegie Hall.
In Rome, he performed in the 1924 Pines of Rome, Roman Festivals in 1928, and many others.
Cause of Death
Respighi died on April 18, 1936, at the age of 56 years. He suffered from complications of blood poisoning.
