About Owen Chamberlain
Owen Chamberlain would be remembered for his role in the discovery of the sub-atomic antiparticle known as ‘Antiproton’. He, together with Emilio Segrè, confirmed their experiment for the first time in 1955 at the University of California, Berkeley. He also worked with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
The American physicist was one of the founders of the mass movement known as “nuclear freeze”, which was very active during the 1980s.
Also known for
Chamberlain was also an outspoken person who addressed issues on social justice and peace. He gained lots of admirers for his stance against the infamous Vietnam War. Furthermore, the American played a part in the creation of the time projection chamber, and was one of the signatories of the Humanist Manifesto which was issued in 2003.
Some of his works as a writer were “Experiments on Antiprotons: Antiproton-Nucleon Cross Sections” and “Personal History of Nucleon Polarization Experiments”.
Personal Life
He had four children with his wife Beatrice Babette Copper.
Education
After Dartmouth College, Chamberlain moved to the University of California, Berkeley. He later joined the University of Chicago for his doctoral studies.
Awards
He was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959.
