About Owen Roberts
Former American judge Owen Josephus Roberts was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and proved his dexterity from 1930 to 1945. He rose to fame for being a part of two Roberts Commissions, with one of them investigating the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
Early Life
The judge lived out his early life in Pennsylvania and first attended the Germantown Academy, graduated and later enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a law degree in 1898. His rise to prominence came when he served as assistant district attorney in Philadelphia and worked on numerous oil reserve scandals in the country.
Career
The attorney was nominated by President Herbert Hoover to fill the vacant seat left as a result of the death of Associate Justice Edward Terry Sanford. The Senate confirmed Roberts’ nomination in May 1930, and Roberts was sworn in as an Associate Justice of our nation’s highest court the following month.
After Roberts became an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, he allowed for a broader interpretation of the Commerce Clause, allowing Congress to pass New Deal legislations that provided a more active federal role in the national economy. He also switched positions on the constitutionality of the New Deal in late 1936, upholding the constitutionality of minimum wage laws. He retired from the bench in 1945. His seat was filled by Harold Hitz Burton.
Trivia
The renowned judge served as a dean for the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1948 to 1951.
Roberts was the first layperson to serve as President of the House of Deputies for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1946.
Personal Life and Death
Roberts tied the knot with Elizabeth Caldwell, with whom he had a daughter called Elizabeth Hamilton. The former judge passed away at his home in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was survived by his daughter and wife.
