About Paavo Nurmi
The Finnish athlete Paavo Johannes Nurmi was widely known for his middle-distance and long-distance running. His tenacity and unshakeable determination on the race track earned him the name "Phantom Finn" in the early 20th century.
Early Life
The athlete was born to Johan Fredrik Nurmi and Matilda Wilhelmina Laine. He was inspired by the English long-distance runner Alfred Shrubb and began his training in endurance at an early age. He trained by engaging in cross-country running and skiing during the winters. Later in life, he joined the Finnish Workers' Sports Federation, founded in 1919.
Olympic Career
The athlete conquered almost all major Olympic competitions throughout his career. He won gold in the 1920 (10,000 meter) and Individual cross-country competitions at Antwerp and the Team cross country competition. He also conquered the Paris Olympic Games in 1924, winning all gold in various competitions such as the 1,500 meters, 5000 meters and 3000 meters team competitions. Nurmi also competed in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam and won silver in his favorite 5,000-meter competition.
Personal Life and Death
Nurmi married Sylvi Nurmi from 1932 to 1935. He died in 1973 and was survived by a child.
