About Papa Bouba Diop
He was a Senegalese football player who played as a defensive midfielder and centre back. He began his senior club career with the Dakar-based ASC Diaraf in 1996. He had played for the club’s youth team for a year.
Diop’s overseas career started in Switzerland where he played for Neuchatel Xamax, Vevey and Grasshopper between 1999 and 2002. His next stop was Lens where he stayed until 2004 when he made his Premier League debut with Fulham. He also featured in the league with West Ham United.
He was raised in Dakar, Senegal.
Achievements
He won the Swiss Super League for the 2000/2001 season with Grasshopper Club Zurich. He also won the 2007/2008 season’s FA Cup with Portsmouth in England.
Diop was part of the Senegalese national team that played in the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup tournament, which was hosted by South Korea and Japan.
He also scored his nation’s first-ever goal at the competition, which came in a 1-0 victory over then-defending champions, France in their opening game of the tournament.
Death
He passed away on 29 November 2020, reportedly from ALS, in Paris. He had been sick for a long while. He was 42.
