About Pappy Boyington
After his training, Pappy Boyington was assigned to the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1935. The following year, he joined the Naval Air Station Pensacola to begin his flight training. In 1937, he was made a Naval Aviator and was stationed at the Marine Corps Base Quantico.
That same year, he was made a second lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. He resigned from the service in 1941 and joined the Republic of China Air Force’s Flying Tigers. During his time with this group, he participated in the military war between Japan and China. He also fought in the Burma war.
After a year, he came back to the Marine Corps and was one of America’s top flying aces during the Second World War. He would be remembered for his time as the commander of the VMF-214, also known as the "Black Sheep".
Family Background
His birth name was Gregory Boyington but grew up as Gregory Hallenbeck, bearing the name of his stepdad Ellsworth J. Hallenbeck. His biological father was a dentist called Charles Boyington.
Education
After completing Lincoln High School in 1930, he joined the University of Washington, Seattle.

Some of his decorations were the Purple Heart, the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
Trivia
He was also known to his colleagues as "Gramps".
