About Paramahansa Yogananda
Paramahansa Yogananda was a prominent Indian guru and yogi who has been credited for introducing the practice to the Western world. A disciple of Sri Yukteswar Giri, Yogananda began practicing at the age of 17 years. After serving under different gurus, he set up a school in 1917 which sought to combine yoga and modern education.
He moved to the United States three years later to start his teaching in the country. He spent close to three decades in the U.S. in which he established the famous Self-Realization Fellowship.
Writing career
As a means of spreading his culture, Yogananda also published many literature. In 1946, he launched his autobiography which was titled “Autobiography of a Yogi”. His other most popular books included “The Second Coming of Christ” and “God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita”.
Family
He spent most of his early years with his parents Gyanprabha Devi and Bhagabati Charan Ghosh alongside seven siblings.
Education
In 1915, he graduated from the Scottish Church College in Calcutta. He also attended Serampore College, and the Senate of Serampore College before enrolling at the University of Calcutta.
Trivia
His image was featured on a postal stamp in India in 1977.
Some of his popular disciples were Daya Mata, Rajarsi Janakananda, and Roy Eugene Davis.
